A French bronze and ormolu pendule au sauvage
Movement by French, Royal Exchange, No.1785. Early 19th Century
Modelled as a youth with glass eyes and carrying a bale of cotton, on a base with canted angles, with front mount cast as a monkey in a branch and side mounts cast as parrots feeding from a basket, with later brass rear cover, with flowerhead cast bezel to a white enamel Roman dial with Arabic quarters, blued steel moon hands, the single chain fusee movement with anchor escapement and signed on the back plate French Royal Exchange London 1785
14in. (36cm.) high

Specialist note

As with other sauvage clocks the case of the present example was made in France. The dial and movement, however, were made in England. They are approximate contemporaries. It was not unusual for English retailers of this period to purchase decorative French cases and use locally-sourced movements and this was probably the case with the present clock.
