TWO CONTINENTAL SILVER-HILTED SMALL-SWORDS
The first third quarter of the 18th Century, the second circa 1800
The first probably German, with tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section etched and gilt at the forte and with single fuller on each face containing the gilt signature 'Anthonio Pichinio', the hilt entirely of silver, including the grip, with boatshell guard, cast and chased throughout in relief with rocailles, scrolls, and diagonal gadrooning (finial of knuckle-guard a working adaptation); the second Iberian, with tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section (surface pitted), the hilt with solid oval guard cast on the inner side with radiating lines of beadwork, faceted knuckle-guard with integral arms, faceted swelling silver grip, and olive-shaped pommel en suite
