Lot Essay

This lot is accompanied by a booklet illustrating the painting on the cover, written in German

This artist studied in Munich and with Munkaksy at Paris. During his career he gained numerous awards and was thought to be one of the most original painters in Germany over the course of the second half of the 19th Century.
Many of his subjects were religious but were painted to seem contemporary. After the advent of Impressionism, he abandoned his rather dark palette using the colours of plein air painting.
This artists's work is held in a multitude of galleries, such as the New York Metropolitan, and the Louvre.
