Lot Essay

In this work Souza explores the exterior and the interior of the human psyche through his use of multiple techniques. Reflecting on the male's occupation as a psychiatrist, Souza has chosen a fractured and cubistic style of representation, painting him "inside out" to reveal a complex and deconstructed persona. In stark contrast to her husband, the wife remains calm and composed, her beauty elegantly finished. Despite their disparate style the couple appears united, due to the similar palette and use of bold black lines, a favorite artistic device of Souza. Souza has chosen to infuse the landscape and portraits with a flurry of bold orange and yellow lines merging the compositional elements and creating a link between the different styles as well as the surrounding nature.
