As a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, Souza consistently worked with the theme of landscape from the 1950's. The structural compositions of Francis Newton Souza's earlier landscape paintings began to dissolve soon after the Sino-Indian war in 1961. His ephemeral image of trees, mountain and sky seems to invoke the style of Claude Monet's late impressionist paintings of water lilies and the dynamic whirling brush stroke of Vincent Van Gogh. However, the elongated shape of the canvas and cropped image could suggest artistic influences as contemporary as a panoramic photograph.
