Each depicting a lion, one with a shield with the head of Hercules, the other with a suit of armour, on an arched plinth one mounted with the club and sword of Hercules, the other with a quiver of arrows, the reverse incised 'RM', regilt

Lot Essay

The chenets evoke ancient virtue with lions supporting a plumed helmet and a shield. Chenets of this pattern, displaying the Medusa-headed shield of the mythical hero Perseus, are in the Bouvier Collection (Musée Carnavalet, Paris).
