Lot Essay

Armfield's small dog pictures were traditionally considered so stylistically similar to works by Landseer that they were often wrongly attributed. Based in London, Armfield specialised in depicting dogs chasing birds, as well as cats, mice, dead game and other animals. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists in London.
