Lot Essay

These painted dining-chairs were probably supplied by Stéphane Boudin, the talented decorator of the celebrated decorating firm of Jansen in Paris. In P. Stansky's Sassoon, The World of Philip and Sybil, New Haven/London, 2003, p. 146, Boudin's role as decorator to Sir Philip remains unclear, although it is suggested that he acted as an advisor for decorating some of his rooms. He may also have helped with the purchase of the 18th century boiseries from Palais Paar in Vienna, now in Wrightsman Galleries of the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
