The red japanned dressing-box displays flowered tablets and a richly polychromed vignette of Chinese figures in a waterside landscape in the so-called 'India' fashion popularised by Messrs Stalker & Parker's, Treatise on Japanning and Varnishing, 1688. Amongst the principal centres of such japanned ware that 'might vie with the oriental' were the Berlin workshops of Gerhard Dagly (fl.1687-1714) and the Dresden workshop established in 1710 by Martin Schnell (d.1740).
