AN EXTREMELY RARE FRENCH REGULATION FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL FOR AN OFFICER OF THE GARDES DU CORPS DU COMTE D'ARTOIS, YOUNGEST SON OF LOUIS XV, LATER CHARLES X, BY PIERRE DUBOYS, ST. ETIENNE circa 1773-74
With sighted swamped etched twist barrel tapering from an octagonal breech section, bevelled lock sparsely engraved with scrolls and signed 'D a Paris', moulded figured walnut full stock (small repair behind the lock), full iron mounts of regulation pattern, including spurred pommel with domed cap engraved with a Sun mask (rubbed), engraved solid side-plate with fleur-de-lys finial and inscribed by the owner 'Compe de Crassol 3', shaped escutcheon incorporating a princely crown, and with iron ramrod (the lock and mounts with light wear).

This pistol and the history of the regiment within the establishment of the Maison Militaire des Princes are recounted in detail in a letter from the late authority Christian Aries, dated 1979.
The regiment was raised in 1773. The chevalier de Crussol served as Captain of the 2ème Compangnie des Gardes du Corps du Comte d'Artois.
