Lot Essay

The arms on the present plates are those of a captain in the Royal Navy who inherited the right to bear them upon the death of his kinsman, Waldo Calmady, in 1755. Warwick died in 1788. It is interesting to note that, although the arms were confirmed to the Calmady family in 1620, no crest was included. Thus the crest on the present plates of a pegasus argent together with the initials W C in the ribbon below must be deemed unofficial.
