Lot Essay

Admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676), was one of the most influential figures of Dutch 17th century history. The date 1648 refers to the Peace Treaty of Munster. Combining these two elements was a typically 19th century way of honouring the renewed interest in national history.
