Painted with a wide band of beetles, butterflies and moths above black-ground flowering vine, all between mint-green scale pattern, the black-ground handle with gilt tassel or bell-flower motifs

Lot Essay

As Howard notes in The Choice of the Private Trader, the present design is "clearly the work of the studio of Cornelis Pronk". The decoration on the handle relates closely to that on Pronk's 'Trumpeter' service.
