Lot Essay

This form of writing table emerged during the 1690s, when Gerrit Jenson supplied three such tables to Kensington Palace for Queen Mary's use. To use, the legs swing forward to support the unfolded top; when not in use, it was folded back against the wall. Similar examples can be found in A. Bowett, English Furniture 1660-1714, pgs. 213-215, figs. 7.35-7.37.
