IRAN, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
Each panel of rectangular form, the plainweave ground, embroidered with metal thread and in bright silk colours, one with a bold stepped design of navy squares and octagons issuing colourful palmettes, the other with silk plainweave ground worked with a design of three vertical bands the main one with repeating palmettes surrounded by flowering vine issuing leaves and flowerheads and housing perching birds, another band with scrolling flowering vine and the third with a floral lattice, all outlined with geometric bands, each separately mounted

Lot Essay

The design of the first panel is very similar to that of both embroideries and carpets attributed to the Caucasus, which was in the 17th and 18th century a part of the Safavid realm. A similar panel is in the Textile Museum, Washington (Carol Bier (ed.), Woven from the Soul, Spun from the Heart, exhibition catalogue, Washington D.C., 1987, no.84, p.286).
