Lot Essay

The use of Palm fronds was a motif particularly favoured by John Vardy in his designs for Spencer House and elsewhere. In view of their prominence in both Vardy's dining chairs (lot 30) and the Palm room suite (lot 20), it seems quite probable that this picture frame may also have been designed by Vardy and possibly carved by his brother Thomas Vardy for Spencer House.
