Lot Essay

This landscape was painted after de Loutherbourg's return from Switzerland in 1788. In 1962, the picture was sold as depicting the River Arveron in the Chamonix Valley, and this is possible.

The picture will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of the works of de Loutherbourg being prepared by Dr. Olivier Lefeuvre, and we are grateful to Dr. Lefeuvre for his help with preparing this catalogue entry.
