Lot Essay

Étude et Méditation is one of four groups representing the virtues modeled by Paul Debois (d. 1905) for the tomb of General Lamoricière at Nantes cathedral completed in 1879. The fondeur Barbedienne edited Étude et Méditation in five sizes and the present 95 cm. high cast is an example of the largest offered: priced at 2000 fr. in their 1886 catalogue.
