Lot Essay

In Figures in Settings Moore portrays what appear to be sculptures set within small pictorial vignettes, and yet the sculptures themselves give the impression of being animated figures which interact in small groups or traverse their small enclosed spaces. The collotype process, which Moore chose to use for only a handful of his early prints, produces a particularly lively surface, further enhancing the sense of annimation in this important early graphic work.
