A RECTANGULAR PAINTED LACQUER BOX AND COVER
17TH CENTURY
The box and cover with shaped base is embellished to the sides with recessed basket-work panels, the exterior is painted in green, black and pink tones with a gathering of officials and attendants by a pavilion in a fenced garden setting within a scrolling gilt border. The interior is painted with four birds perched on flowering branches of tree peonies and prunus by rocks on a brownish black lacquer ground.
