The Seto chaire is accompanied by a note in French from the previous collector translated as: n. 48. Oribe, 16th century, a piece executed by Moemon for Oda Nobunaga, a minister of Hideyoshi, victor of Korea.
Although there are several theories on who Moemon was, it is possible that the inscription refers to a well-known potter of Seto Nochigama ware in Muromachi to Momoyama period (16th century). There were six potters who were selected and received their signature marks from Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) in 1563. One of them was Kato Moemon (Tokuan) who received a cross mark to be used on his works.
