LAMBERT, William. The Cricketers’ Guide or a Concise Treatise on the Noble Game of Cricket as practised by the most eminent players. Sussex Press, Lewes: J. Baxter, Derby: Mozley, London: Langley and Co [and three others], [1819]. 12° (155 x 95mm). 62pp., folding engraved frontispiece, woodcut title vignette. (Frontispiece a little spotted, occasional light spotting and staining of text.) Modern full calf gilt.
FIFTH EDITION. A TALL, WELL-PRESERVED COPY. A different issue to the copy above as evidenced by changes in the imprint. However, as with the previous copy, there is no printed slip between pages 54 and 55 giving alterations to the dimensions of the stumps and popping crease. This would suggest that the presence of the slip is not an issue point but merely an insert necessitated by the changes to the laws made at the MCC annual dinner in 1819. The words ‘ball’ and ‘the force’ on p. 45 are not misprinted. The first leaf, blank on recto, carries the advertisement for Baxter’s Farmer’s Account Book on verso. Allen 17; Goldman p.119; Taylor p.61; Hancock Handbook Edition 5th; Padwick 383. Sold with Roger Hancock, A Handbook for William Lambert’s Cricketer’s Guide (Brighton, 2006).
