Details
ROWLANDSON, Thomas (1757-1827). Racing. London: S.W. Fores, January 1799.

Oblong 4º (270 x 363mm). 6 hand-coloured etched plates by and after Rowlandson, blue wash borders, tipped into an album, interleaved. (Some mainly marginal spotting, small repairs to margins.) Red straight-grained morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, covers with gilt borders and corner-pieces, smooth spine lettered longitudinally in gilt, lavish gilt turn-ins, green silk doublures (a little light rubbing), red cloth slipcase. Provenance: Clarence S. Bement (bookplate; purchased from F.T. Sabin in 1902) – Joseph E. Widener (morocco label; purchased from Rosenbach, 3 February 1906) – acquired at the Widener sale, 29 November 1944.

RARE RACING PRINTS IN ROWLANDSON’S BEST MANNER. It is as much the behaviour of the crowd as the performance of the horses which lend incident to the plates, the race course providing a spectacle of eating, drinking, betting and amorous dalliance, with young ladies in occasional flight from runaway horses. The plates are bound in a different order to that given in Spitzer p. 238.
