BRITISH ENGRAVINGS – A collection of engravings with many portraits of British aristocrats, 18th or 19th century.
92 engravings, etchings, mezzotints and lithographs on 64 sheets, various sizes (from c.745 x 525 to 210 x 185mm, and the reverse) including a suite of 17 double-portraits of British aristocracy and one of Charles I, and 4 prints by and/or after Stubbs, mounted into two 2° albums (891 x 590mm and 539 x 410mm). (Some sheets torn, others with plates missing, several plates loose, occasional light soiling and light spotting.) The larger folio bound in 19th-century roan, sides panelled in gilt, gilt spine (extremely rubbed and worn); the smaller album lacking covers and with remains of calf spine. Provenance: Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-1899; bookplate).
A large group of prints, including Stubbs’ large format mezzotint The lion and stag. Other works in these albums include portraits of Handel, Viscount Curzon, Henry Dundas, William Addington, George Savile, Thomas Howard, and Sir Isaac Newton. There are also several British topographical views, including South west view of St. Nicholas Church, Lower Tooting, Surrey, by W.J. Wade, which is fully hand-coloured.
