PALESTINE – COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA IN ARABIC, HEBREW AND YIDDISH
A group of 9 Communist publications relating to Palestine, comprising: COMMUNIST PARTY OF PALESTINE. The Jewish Yishuv and the Arab National Movement. Jerusalem: Al-Nafir printing house in Haifa, November 1925. 16pp. pamphlet (162 x 120mm), text in Yiddish. (Some dogearring, second leaf frayed at top margin with consequent loss of a few letters on p.4, pp.5-8 with chips to lower margin with loss of a few words.) Pamphlet agitating for the hard working masses of Arabs and Jews to work together against the Zionist capitalist movement and its evils and against the British occupation. It is priced ‘5 mills’ – A Voice from the Syrian Prisons and Strongholds. Tel Aviv: L. Kerem, [n.d., but after 18 December 1926]. Single 4° gathering (175 x 128mm), 8pp. pamphlet, text in Yiddish, woodblock title vignette of handkerchief being waved through prison bars. (Faint, mostly marginal, soiling on title.) Describes the tortures and abhorrent conditions of the Arab brothers in ‘Quadmus, Raka, Amyun, Bikfaya and Aryad in a series of letters smuggled out of these prisons –PROFINTERN. To all the Railway Workers Jews and Arabs! To all the Workers in the Land! [N.p.:] Printing Press of the Palestine Communist Party, [n.d., but after June 1931]. 6pp. pamphlet (215 x 150mm), text in Hebrew. (Light soiling and dogearring.) Strong anti-Zionist pamphlet, accusing the Zionist leaders headed by Ben-Zvi (Isaac ben Zvi, later the second president of the state Israel 1952-1963) as being an enemy of the workers and preventing Arabs and Jews to unite and defend their interests together – CENTRAL PALESTINIAN COMMUNIST COMMITTEE. To all Workers, Peasants and Revolutionary Citizens. [N.p.] 1932. Leaflet printed on both sides (313 x 130mm), text in Arabic, with a list of demands including calling for the expulsion of the British military and police authorities, cancellation of the Balfour Treaty, prohibition of further Zionist migration and the release of 1929 political prisoners – COMMUNIST INTERNATIONAL. To the Brotherhood of Workers, Poor People and Peasants No.21. [N.p.] 1933. 4° (312 x 235), 9pp., text in Arabic. (A couple of margins lightly creased and frayed.) Stapled printed orange wrappers, front cover illustration of a man smashing chains wrapped around the Middle East with a communist hammer. Communist periodical with articles covering such topics as the establishment of the Communist Party of Palestine, review of the last 4 years since the 1929 riots, ‘The British occupation of India falters in the face of opposition’, coverage of Faisal’s, King of Iraq, visit to London, and the problem of water supply in Jerusalem – COMMUNIST PARTY OF PALESTINE. Assistance to Arabs, calling upon their neighbours against vicious occupation and the chains of Zionism in their territory. [N.p.] 1933. Leaflet printed on both sides (315 x 190mm), hammer and sickle motif in headline, text in Arabic, demanding land re-distribution and detailing the forced expulsion of Arabs by Zionists over the past 15 years – PROLETARIAN COMMITTEE IN HAIFA. To the Workers of Haifa. Haifa: [n.d., but after 16 September 1942]. Leaflet printed on both sides (243 x 155mm), text in Arabic and Hebrew. (Light staining and dogearring.) Details various demands of the workers including rises in salaries, improvements in working conditions, minimum wages and the use of strikes – CENTRAL COMMUNIST PARTY OF PALESTINE. A Call to Gather on the Occasion of the Death of King Faisal of Iraq. [N.p., n.d., but September 1933]. Leaflet printed on both sides (237 x 152mm), text in Arabic, suggesting that Faisal was poisoned by the British, and calling for a revolution to liberate all parts of the Arab world – V-LEAGUE IN AID OF SOVIET RUSSIA. To all the Inhabitants of Palestine. Tel-Aviv: Cooperative Press ‘Achduth’ Ltd for the Central Secretariat, [n.d., but 1942]. Bifolium leaf (155 x 118mm), 4pp., text in English (Light soiling and dogearring.) Propaganda leaflet rallying support for the USSR in WW2, asking for funds, industrial equipment and medical supplies to be sent to the ‘anti-Fascist front’.
EXTREMELY RARE COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA CALLING FOR ARABS AND JEWS IN PALESTINE TO WORK TOGETHER AGAINST FURTHER ZIONIST MIGRATION AND OPPOSE BRITISH IMPERIAL RULE. These scarce ephemeral survivors indicate an unexpected level of co-operation between Jew and Arab in Palestine before the Second World War, perhaps best epitomised by the first named work which is printed in Yiddish by an Arab press in Haifa.
