Lot Essay

A buckskin-clad Custer on a hunting outing during the 1874 Black Hills Expedition.

The image was captured by William H. Illingworth, the expedition's photographer. Custer is pictured with the scout Bloody Knife, engineer William Ludlow, and Private Noonan. Likely Illingworth's most well-known work, the photo was often reproduced and widely sold as a stereograph.
