Lot Essay

Since its introduction, the RM010 has become one of Richard Mille’s most recognisable and highly coveted automatic wristwatches. Combining the manufacture’s distinctive tonneau-shaped architecture with an innovative approach to automatic winding, the model perfectly reflects Richard Mille’s pursuit of technical performance and contemporary design.

At its heart is the automatic calibre RM-AS7, produced and assembled by the renowned movement specialist Renaud & Papi in Le Locle. Among its most notable features is the variable-geometry rotor, which allows the winding efficiency to be adapted to the wearer’s level of activity. By adjusting the six-position setting of the rotor ribs, its inertia can be modified: winding can be accelerated for a less active wearer or reduced during periods of greater physical activity. This ingenious system allows the automatic winding mechanism to be tailored directly to the wearer’s lifestyle.

Richard Mille
A veteran of the watch industry, Richard Mille began his career in 1974 and spent more than two decades developing his expertise before setting out to create watches under his own name. Drawing inspiration from the advanced engineering and pursuit of performance found in the automotive and aviation industries, he began developing his first timepieces in 2000.

The inaugural RM001 Tourbillon was launched in 2001, followed that same year by the RM002, which further developed the concept with a titanium baseplate and function indicator. In 2002, the RM003 introduced a dual-time indication. These early creations established the technical and aesthetic principles that would define Richard Mille, combining innovative materials, complex mechanics and an immediately recognisable architectural design.
