With tapering blade with central fuller on each face of the forte, stamped 'JJ Runkel Solingen', iron guard with slender straight quillons with mushroom-shaped terminals and arms linked by an inner forked diagonal guard, faceted fig-shaped pommel, and wire-bound wooden grip

J.J. Runkel (1705-1808) was a German swordsmith (?) and merchant who exported blades to Britain and is recorded in London from 1795, becoming a naturalised British subject in the following year. See W.E. May & P.G.W. Annis, Swords for Sea Service, 1970, II, p. 302
