Goyen, Goyen, Gone: An Online Selling Exhibition
Sale Overview
Few landscapists have inspired generations of commentators and collectors like Jan van Goyen, one of the greatest and most inventive practitioners of the genre across the ages. It is perhaps unsurprising that the greatest Dutch connoisseur of the age, Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), singled-out the young van Goyen for commendation among the ‘harvest of landscape painters’ in his autobiography, written between 1629 to 1631. Van Goyen’s poetic vision, interest in fleeting atmospheric effects and careful observation of the local Dutch landscape were captured in more than 1200 surviving painted landscapes produced in a career that spanned nearly four decades. These works stand as paeons to a young republic whose economic and political fortunes were on the rise.
This private selling exhibition showcases a curated selection of some of the finest works by the artist to hit the market in recent years and highlights the remarkable range of subjects to which he turned his brush.
