Christie’s is delighted to announce the opening of our new gallery space in Southampton for summer 2021 selling exhibitions, exclusively partnering with Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
Artists have been inspired by the bucolic surroundings of the East End of Long Island ever since the expansion of the railroad in the late 19th century. Over the next 100 years artists continued to flock to the area, inspired by the unique landscape and the respite it offered from the oppressive heat of New York City summers.
The close proximity of the land to the sea inspired the fluid abstractions of Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan and Lee Krasner, while the vast expanse of space injected new vitality into the works of Fairfield Porter and Roy Lichtenstein. In 1971, even the most ardent of city dwellers, Andy Warhol, acquired his clifftop estate near the historic Montauk Lighthouse.
Join us this summer for Out East, Grace Hartigan: No Rules and more as we capture the magic of this special place, and reveal how the beguiling beauty of Long Island spurred a rich and varied body of work.
