John Constable fut l’une des figures artistiques les plus originales de la peinture européenne du début du XIXe siècle. L’influence de son œuvre, à l’instar de celle de son quasi-contemporain J.M.W. Turner, continua de se faire sentir en Grande-Bretagne et à l’échelle internationale longtemps après sa mort.
Né en 1776, Constable a grandi dans le village d’East Bergholt, dans le Suffolk, et ce village ainsi que la campagne environnante allaient constituer ses sources d’inspiration artistique les plus constantes. Sa volonté de se concentrer sur le paysage pur comme sujet principal de son art, dépourvu de toute référence historique, religieuse ou mythologique manifeste, combinée à la technique singulière qu’il a développée pour le rendre, a remis en question les orthodoxies artistiques de l’époque et a inspiré des générations d’artistes depuis lors.
Les œuvres de Constable sont célèbres pour leur représentation détaillée, atmosphérique et dramatique de la nature. Son père, Golding Constable, un prospère marchand de blé et de charbon, avait hérité du bail du moulin de Flatford en 1764, et Constable trouva dans ce moulin à eau une source inépuisable de possibilités artistiques. Il peignit plus de vues de Flatford et de ses environs immédiats que tout autre sujet au cours de toute sa carrière. Son tableau, The Lock, s’est vendu chez Christie’s en 2012 pour un prix record de 22 441 250 £. Cette œuvre, comme beaucoup d’autres, témoigne de la capacité de Constable à saisir le jeu de la lumière et de l’atmosphère, qu’il qualifiait de « clair-obscur de la nature ».
L’engagement de Constable envers la peinture de paysage était considéré comme révolutionnaire à l’époque. Il travaillait principalement en plein air, réalisant des croquis directement d’après nature, qu’il transformait ensuite en œuvres achevées dans son atelier. Son dévouement à capturer le monde naturel tel qu’il le voyait constituait à la fois un rejet des paysages idéalisés en vogue à l’époque et un précurseur des développements ultérieurs de l’École de Barbizon, ainsi que des mouvements romantiques et impressionnistes français.
John Constable est mort en 1837 ; son héritage en tant que l’un des plus grands peintres paysagistes de l’histoire de l’art demeure. Ses œuvres, telles que celles exposées à l’abbaye d’Anglesey, y compris sa représentation emblématique du pont de Waterloo, continuent d’être célébrées pour leur représentation fidèle du paysage anglais, faisant de lui une figure incontournable de l’art britannique.
