Awakening Wisdom: Masterpieces Of Buddhist Art From A Private Asian Collection

Awakening Wisdom: Masterpieces Of Buddhist Art From A Private Asian Collection

À propos de la vente

The dedicated standalone sale ‘Awakening Wisdom: Masterpieces of Buddhist Art from a Private Asian Collection’ brings together a selection of Buddhist sculptures, painting, and embroidery from a private collection assembled with a discerning eye and a refined taste. Offered during Hong Kong Asian Art Week, this curated sale presents eight treasures of exceptional rarity, provenance, and artistic excellence.

Leading the sale is a monumental 12th-century gilt copper figure of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom. Standing an impressive 93 cm high, the sculpture retains its luminous gilding and sumptuous jewelling, balancing majesty and sublimity. Equally noteworthy is a 10th- to 11th-century solidly cast gilt copper figure of Shakyamuni, depicting the enlightened one at the moment of his attainment of Buddhahood. Other highlights include an awe-inspiring Mandala of Hevajra, dating to circa 1370-1380, distinguished by its intricate composition, vibrant colours, and exquisite brushwork. Created by Newar artists, these masterpieces mark a pivotal chapter in the transmission of Buddhist ideals that exerted profound influence across Asia.

Special Notice
From June 2025, EU regulations 2019/880 and 2021/1079 introduce new licensing requirements and regulations relating to the import of cultural goods into the EU. We recommend clients check ahead of the sale whether the lot they wish to purchase and its import into the EU could be impacted by the regulations.
