Josef Albers

Josef Albers era un artista di origine tedesca celebre per i suoi straordinari contributi alla teoria del colore. Dopo aver iniziato la sua carriera al Bauhaus prima di emigrare in America, è noto soprattutto per la sua lunga serie di dipinti intitolata Homage to the Square. La sua arte era strettamente legata alla sua attività didattica, culminata nel suo trattato fondamentale del 1963 Interaction of Colour. Per mezzo secolo ha insegnato a generazioni di futuri artisti come riflettere sullo spettro cromatico.

Albers arrivò al Bauhaus di Weimar nel 1920. Lì incontrò la sua futura moglie Anni, che sarebbe poi diventata una rinomata artista tessile. Nel 1925, in seguito al trasferimento della scuola a Dessau, Albers divenne uno dei primi studenti del Bauhaus a essere nominato maestro, insegnando al fianco di figure del calibro di Paul Klee e Wassily Kandinsky. Lavorando in una vasta gamma di discipline, tra cui il vetro, la fotografia e la falegnameria, realizzò opere significative, tra cui i suoi iconici tavolini impilabili. Dopo la chiusura del Bauhaus nel 1933, Albers si trasferì in America. Lì assunse un incarico di insegnamento presso il radicale Black Mountain College nella Carolina del Nord, dove rimase fino al 1949. Nel corso degli anni attirò all’istituzione numerosi talenti emergenti, tra cui Robert Rauschenberg come studente e Willem de Kooning e Robert Motherwell come giovani docenti. Durante questo periodo, insieme ad Anni, compì frequenti viaggi in Messico, scoprendo un amore per l’arte e l’architettura precolombiane che avrebbe esercitato un’influenza importante sul suo linguaggio astratto.

Nel 1950, Albers fu nominato direttore del neocostituito Dipartimento di Design dell’Università di Yale. Quello stesso anno diede inizio alla serie Structural Constellation, composta da disegni geometrici e stampe. Realizzò inoltre il suo primo Homage to the Square, dando il via al ciclo che lo avrebbe occupato fino alla sua morte, avvenuta 26 anni dopo. Questi quadrati annidati divennero laboratori per esplorare gli effetti mutevoli del colore, ciascuno dei quali offriva profonde rivelazioni sul suo comportamento in contesti diversi. Albers applicava la pittura a olio utilizzando una spatola, adottando infine il lato ruvido del Masonite come supporto.

Oggi questi dipinti figurano tra i suoi risultati più significativi e sono all’origine dei prezzi più alti raggiunti alle aste. Opere come Homage to the Square: White Nimbus (1964) e Study for Homage

to the Square: Red Tetrachord (1962) hanno ottenuto ottimi risultati da Christie’s.
