Lot Essay
Ernst Grube wrote a short article questioning the origin of the roundels that are frequently found in pottery dishes of this period (Ernst J. Grube, "Pomegranates, Lychees or Loquats, an offering of Timirud Chinese Fruits", in Patricia L. Baker and Barbara Brend (eds.), Sifting Sands, Reading Signs, London, 2006, pp.209-214). He poses there the question about what the orign of these motifs are, coming to the conclusion that they are clearly from a Chinese original. He does not attempt to explain why they became quite so popular throughout the Timurid world. Please see also the note to the following lot.
