A VERY RARE PAIR OF NORTHERN TUSCO-EMILIAN SNAPHAUNCE BELT PISTOLS SIGNED ALESSO GHINI, LOIANO
circa 1660
With slender Brescian barrels formed in three stages, stamped with the barrelsmith's signature 'Pietro Moreto' in two lines between 'propeller' stamps (di Carpegna,M1), bevelled flat locks with recessed tails, each signed 'Alesso Gini, Loiano' within a decorated cartouche at the rear, the cock retaining screws each chiselled with a mask (one steel repaired), highly figured curly walnut full stocks carved with diagonal beaded mouldings behind the ramrod apertures (each with small repairs, one fore-end replaced towards the muzzle, one cracked below the lock), inset with small pierced engraved flat iron plaques impaled by the side-nails, one formed as a dragon, the other a serpent's head ribband, with a further iron lion's mask plaque behind each barrel tang, pierced chiselled triggers, iron pommels and trigger-guards finely engraved with leaf patterns and border scrollwork, the trigger-guard finials pierced and chiselled en suite, moulded ramrod-pipes, moulded fore-end caps, belt hooks, and the ramrods expertly replaced.
