The paternal admonition

The prototype of the composition, on canvas and measuring 71 x 73 cm., is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; the present work, however, may be after the slightly later, autograph variant of not later than 1655 formerly in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin-Dahlem, which like the present work is of upright format (70 x 60 cm.) and omits the dog to the right of the father's chair in the Amsterdam picture.
