The mark, Zhonghua minguo sanshiliu nian follwed by the seal Zhongzheng, dates the vases to the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947). Zhongzheng is the name adopted by Chiang Kai-shek around 1917, when he became close to Sun Yat-sen.

In 1947 Chiang established the Taoci Zhuanke Xuexiao, Ceramics College, in Jingdezhen to create ceramics, some of which bear the mark seen on the present vase. These ceramics were of high quality and intended as gifts to China's Second World War allies and other foreign dignitaries. Production ceased after one year due to the outbreak of China's civil war.
