HOPI MAIDEN KACHINA
Hopi Maiden Kachina carved of a single piece of slightly bent cottonwood root with string around neck. Wearing maiden costume of kilt and shawl painted in red, black and white with traditional patterning around the bottom edges. The case mask has slit eyes. Hands are barely visible at the front edge of shawl. The traditional hair whorls of unmarried girls, sometimes known as butterfly whorls or squash blossoms, are seen at the back of the head, catalogue number 491-G-476 written under kilt
