Lot Essay

Roberts was at Jaffa 25-27 March 1839 and a second watercolour, of Jaffa looking South, was also done on the 26th (sold in these Rooms, 19 November 1968, lot 114, 900gns. illustrated); this was lithographed as pl.2 of the second volume of The Holy Land as a full-page illustration, whereas the present drawing was used for a half-page illustration.
The accompanying note remarks that 'Here Noah is said to have built the Ark! - here Andromeda to have been exposed to the Sea-monster...'.
