[ALLESTREE, Richard ((1619-1681)]. The Works. Oxford: at the Theater and Roger Norton for George Pawlett in London, 1684.

2 parts in one volume, 2° (364 x 226mm). Engraved frontispiece, two title vignettes, head-piece portrait of Charles II. (Old dampstaining to lower margins.) Contemporary English red morocco gilt, covers elaborately tooled using roll-tools, pointillé volutes and various small tools to a 'cottage-roof' design with a large inset central rectangular panel, the spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others tooled in gilt with various small tools, g.e. (scuffed, light damage to surface of leather of lower cover). Provenance: Mrs. Jane Thynne ("keepsake" label dated 1686, signature dated 1718); Sir Charles William Rouse Boughton (armorial bookplate).

A good copy of the first folio edition of Allestree's works in an unusual, but unfortunately unidentified binding -- possibly the work of an Oxford binder, but not by either Roger Bartlett or Richard Sedgley. The booklabel is perhaps an indication that the book was acquired by Jane Thynne during a visit to the Sheldonian, it reads "Mrs. Jane Thynne. Printed at the Theater in Oxford October 15. 1686". According to Nicholas Barker "Visitors to the Press from its early days were offered 'a keepsake', a sheet of paper with their name and the date within an ornamental border printed on it; they were allowed to pull the press themselves on these occasions" (The Oxford University Press and the Spread of Learning p.60). Wing A-1082.
