A silver-hilted German hunting hanger
Dated 1776
The broad straight blade double-edged at the point, engraved on one face with the date and 'L.F.C.E. C.Z.E. Furstenau', the hilt comprising downbent pelta-shaped shell, short rear quillon terminating in an animal's head, slender knuckle-guard, pommel-cap cast as a lion's head, and natural staghorn grip-scales held by two rivets with large silver heads, on the outer side formed as rocailles, the silver throughout cast and chased in relief with scenes of animals of the chase in landscapes

Lot Essay

Fürstenau was a seat of the Erbach family, and the initials in the inscription must, therefore, refer to a Graf zu Erbach
