A CHARLES II WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCK

The 10in. sq. gilt dial signed Joseph Knibb, London beneath the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with finely sculpted blued steel hands, finely matted centre with calendar aperature below XII, the foliate engraved border with 'fat-head' winged cherub spandrels, latches to the dial feet and to the four ringed pillar movement with anchor escapement and spring-suspended brass-rod pendulum with butterfly rating nut, outside countwheel strike on 'pork pie' bell above, the case with carved wood cresting to the rising hood with later pierced wood frieze-fret, barley-twist columns, convex throat moulding above the rectangular trunk door with later gilt-brass escutcheon, convex moulding to the plinth on later skirt

The present clock has an early 10 in. dial with Knibb's special spandrels whcih R.A. Lee op. cit. affectionately terms 'fat-head'! The movement has Knibb's squared-off pork-pie bell and brass-rod pendulum with his own rating system employing a butterfly nut
