James Abeel, Morristown [New Jersey], 19 January 1780, 1 2/3 pages, part of address leaf present, silked, right-hand edge ragged, with small losses in several lines, a circular letter during the terrible 1780 winter encampment, regarding the Quartermaster's accounts, requiring that "every person serving in the QMaster Generals Department...make out...an exact return of the sums of money due in their respective district," and instructing Abeel to give "printed certificates in those cases where you cannot pay the money, specifying the sums due to each person," reiterating the importance of accurate records and sending a resolve of Congress -- WILLIAM ALEXANDER STIRLING, Lord, Major General, Continental Army. Autograph letter signed TO GENERAL NATHANAEL GREENE, Elizabeth Town [New Jersey], 26 October, 1778, 1 page, oblong 4to, light browning, stating that he is "much of your opinion as to wintering the Troops, and now send my [opinion] to his Excellency General Washington...." -- RICHARD HENRY LEE, Signer (Virginia).
