A Regency Mahogany eight-day marine chronometer
John Roger Arnold No 393; circa 1812
The white enamel dial signed and numbered Arnold, London 393, Roman hour numerals, gold hour and minute hands, subsidiary seconds dial (at VI) and sector up-and-down dial (at XII) with Arabic numerals 0-1-2 et seque, both with blued steel hands, main frame assembly inscribed Jn R Arnold London 393, carrying barrel and fusee, sub-frame assembly carrying centre wheel and remainder of the train, Arnold escapement, bi-metallic Arnold Z balance, oversprung blued steel helical balance spring, Arnold spring detent with steel locking pallet, mounted in brass bowl with engine-turned bezel and bayonet locking, key-way guides (at III and IX), the whole contained in brass gimballed outer bowl, square-section brass gimbal ring, with two sprung brass locking arms, two-tier mahogany box the bottom section lined with purple velvet, brass drop handles and (later) bone disc to front inscribed Arnold 393 Eight Day, the top section with recessed spring operated lid covering glazed viewing port, and to the front an applied square-shape brass dial with peep-hole viewing of revolving dial inscribed Sunday-Monday-Tuesday et seque for the week, manually turned from inside the lid.
