A 12½-inch (31.7cm.) diameter terrestrial table globe made up of twelve coloured printed gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days, the oceans showing steamship routes and oceans currents, the continents with nation states variously outlined in orange, green, yellow and blue with various political and physical geographical labellings, partial Antarctic coastline shown, Cyprus shown as British, north Alaska labelled INUIT ESKIMO STAMME, German section of South Seas outlined in red, with iron support raised on baluster turned ebonized column and plinth base -- 20¾in. (52.7cm.) high

Lot Essay

Ernst Schotte established the Berlin firm in 1855 and by 1870 was one of the most successful continental globe manufacturers, producing terrestrial and celestial globes, a variety of planetaria and even a Mars globe in 1900, all in a range of languages and in nine different sizes.
On this globe the Congo is shown as belonging to Belgium and Panama is shown as being part of Columbia, thus dating the globe between 1885 and 1903, when Panama gained its independence.
