Circa 1780
With curved single-edged fullered blade back-edged towards the point (some pitting), slotted steel hilt comprising broad pierced lozenge-shaped hand-guard with decoratively notched edges drawn out at the front to form a fluted tapering knuckle-guard linked to a chiselled lion's head pommel, and spirally fluted and ribbed ivory grip
29in. (73.8cm.) blade
This is an example of a type of sword more frequently found with a silver or brass hilt (cf. L. Southwick, The Price Guide to Antique Edged Weapons, figs. 251-53). Possibly made for the American market
