Largely a self-taught portrait miniaturist, though receiving some training from Gilbert Stuart, Sarah Goodridge began her highly successsful career opening a studio in Boston in 1820. She continued as a portrait miniaturist until her death in 1853, and made portrait painting trips to Washington, D.C. in 1829 and 1842.
