Lot Essay

A study for the figure seated on the right of The Supper at Emmaus painted by Empoli for the chapel of the Villa degli Albizi, now called Villa Frescobaldi, in Pomino, A. Marabottini, Jacopo di Chimenti da Empoli, Rome, 1988, no. 63, pl. XXXII. The picture is signed and dated 1609 and was probably executed in October 1609.
Two compositional drawings for the picture are in the Uffizi and the Louvre, A. Marabottini, op. cit., nos. 63a and 63g. Two figure studies, of the same type as the present one, for the figure on the left and two for the boy bringing a plate are also in the Uffizi, A. Marabottini, op. cit., nos. 63b-c and 63d-e. An early study for the figure on the right, later moved to the left, is in Florence, A. Marabottini, op. cit., fig. 63f.
