AN ITALIAN BLONDE AND DARK TORTOISESHELL CENTREPIECE
Naples, circa 1720
On domed base of shaped outline piqu in gold and mother-of-pearl with three scenes of classical figures sacrificing to the Altar of Love and with libations, and with further scenes of tritons and sea-nymphs, the stem above formed as three dolphins, their heads set with mother-of-pearl eyes and piqu with scrolls, their scales piqu point with gold highlights, each supporting on its tail a detachable circular bowl rising from scroll bracket terminating in mother-of-pearl mask, the bowls in differing shades of tortoiseshell piqu in gold and mother-of-pearl with varying scenes of Venus, Cupid, masks and putti some within cartouches flanked by griffins and some by putti, the central baluster stem surmounted by similar bowl piqu with infant bacchanals
