Having studied at the academies of Dsseldorf and Berlin, Schulz travelled to Holland, France and England and reaching Russia in 1847. Noted primarily as a painter of seascapes and of hunting, he later dedicated himself to military subjects including the armies of Frederick the Great, William III of Prussia, and the Russian Army of Nicholas I. For three similar canvases see Turin, Archivio di Stato, Splendori della Corte degli Zar, (1999).
